Similar to almost every Spring journey home, I am running in about two hours of sleep, and spent all morning packing and putting my things in storage. Somehow this semester feels different. I don’t have that weird feeling of anticipation in my stomach like I usually do. Either I have done this routine so many times that the effect has worn off, or I’ve been so longing for home this semester that I’ve run out of anticipation. The third option is that I, for once, have no expectations of what this summer is going to look like. Now that we’re living in Altamonte, a whole new world has been opened up, and yet I feel like I’m leaving the one place that I had finally settled into. I have become so accustomed to moving every four months from Florida to New York, and I grew up moving from state to state. But it’s odd to leave the house that I’ve been in for nearly seven years now. It’s the longest I’ve ever lived in any house, in my entire life. I’m excited for the new apartment, but I think that all notion of expectation has been exhausted.
Life seems so different that two years ago, or even last year. Since I was here at Syracuse Airport a year ago, I’ve toured the U.K., gained some new best friends, spent a substantial amount of time away from other friends (which is not okay), and those close to me have gotten married and engaged and suddenly people are graduating and moving away. Life seems so much more real this summer, somehow. It doesn’t feel lost in a fantasy land (though I have been fantasizing about hot days on the beach). Somehow it’s different though, and I can’t put my finger on it.
My mom just called, and we realized that in my life time, I’ve flown at least 33 times, 17 of which have been in college alone. So maybe that’s what it is. The newness has somehow warn off, and I long more for my destination than the journey at the moment, though I did get the “even more space” seat for free when I checked in! My plane boards in just an hour, so I think I will finally start making my way toward the gate.
Another year to be checked off the list. I only have one more summer and one more year, and I must make the most of every opportunity within them!
